Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea Italy Italy covers an area of 301,338 km2 (116,347 sq mi) and shares its borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino and Vatican City. With about 61 million inhabitants it is the 4th most populous EU member state.
Italy is regarded as one of the world’s most industrialised nations and a leading country in world trade and exports: its economy is the third largest in the Eurozone and the eight largest in the world. The country is a founding member of the G7, G8, Eurozone and the OECD.
Due to its shape it is often referred to in Italy as Lo Stivale (the Booth) and it offers a largely temperate climate, an abundant and varied nature which includes the Alps the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe as well as the African style sandy beaches of south Sicily. The Italian territory offers many natural areas, beautiful beaches, cool mountains, countryside and little hills and lovely lakes and it is suitable for every need.
Extremely rich in history, art, culture, known worldwide for its typical picturesque landscapes and villages, Italy is the only country in the world that boasts 51 UNESCO World Heritage sites scattered throughout the entire country.
